What.

Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize?

I... what? He's been in office for ten months. I'm glad he closed Guantanamo... or at least kind of issued an order to that eventual effect... but I'm not pleased with some of his approaches to spending. So I guess thus far I'd say his presidency has been "unremarkable." Which is fine! He's got time. And he's certainly better than his predecessor... heck, almost by default.

But really. I guess honors really do beget honors. The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to some people who arguably didn't deserve it, but usually the controversy is over the relative importance (or correctness) of their actions (e.g. Al Gore, who did something about global warming, so if you don't buy that theory, did nothing at all). I'm at a loss. The committee's chatter about a "nuke-free world" and "work with Iran" is nonsensical. As the President of the United States, President Obama is in a better position to make the world more "nuke free" by simply ordering a couple warheads dismantled. As for "hope," well, that seems a tad intangible for the Nobel Prize, don't you think?

Words fail me. I mean, hey, congratulations, Mr. President--cool prize! There are certainly worse people to award it to. Maybe I'll get one next year!

...

But seriously, what!?

UPDATE:

As usual, President Obama has a gracious speech for us. He seems to recognize that this is a little silly.

"I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments."

Neither do we, Mr. President. Neither do we. So for the record, I don't think less of you for having received the prize. But the Nobel Prize overall? Has become somewhat farcical.

Oh, and Mr. Phoenix? If you ever read this--I stand corrected. d^_^b
