Today is 5 May 2009. Aprilynne's book, Wings, is officially available at bookstores everywhere!
So, exciting statement made, now I get to say some stuff that most of you will find quite dull. It has been fascinating to watch this book grow from an idea to a dream to a reality... and to watch people react. A lot of people really love the book; some don't. Some people assume it will be great because Stephenie Meyer blurbed it; some people assume it will be horrible for the same reason. Adults who crave obtuse, sprawling, purple literature aren't impressed. They especially find David unbelievably perfect, which is funny because he's probably the character whose actions are most frequently based on a real person's. As a general rule, the target audience--girls in grades six through nine--responds with a lot of enthusiasm. So: mission accomplished!
Everyone has a bias. My bias is that I know the story arc of all four books. There are tiny hints throughout Wings of what is to come. I will be interested to see if Aprilynne's harshest critics can swallow their pride when they realize that their criticisms are generally premature--that Wings is deceptive in its simplicity. I'm very excited for the story to blossom. Aprilynne is polishing up the second book right now and there's a lot there to love. I'm very proud of her.
Anyhow, I should probably just post this. If you haven't already, go buy Aprilynne's book! Heck, even if you have already, buy some more, give them to your friends! d^_^b And enjoy.
